School Board Meeting

September 15th, 2009

Members Present: Alan Fijal, Mike Belschwinder, David Gogolla, Yong Jo, Bob Jordan and Don Gillingham

Members Absent: None

The September meeting opened with the Principal’s discussion of enrollment. The school this year has a few less students than last year in the grades 1-8. The Early Childhood Center (ECC) program is blessed to have enough children enrolled to cover the expense. This is a great start and better yet we have room to grow. The principal mentioned that the ECC will utilize a rolling admission system and will accept applications all year long.

In planning on how to expand technology usage, we are striving for teachers to begin using computer programs in the classroom. To help with this, a teacher specializes and obtains competence in one software application. Then this teacher will help teach their application to other staff.

The Work-Off-Tuition program is in need of modernized documentation and process review. This program is a useful and valuable program and will remain in our organization to be utilized and benefit our parents and school.

The SMART tuition program is our primary payment scheme. The policy concerning this program will be reviewed by Don.

In the absence of Ms. Walter, the Principal has been assisted by Joan Manion and Melissa McLennan in the school office. Ms. Walter is expected to return to work as soon as she can. The Principal reported that Ms. McLennan is doing a great job filling in for Ms. Walter. Ms McLennan will be seen in the office for some time. Make sure you say hi when you see her.

The Principal advised that the School is developing a plan to use designated gifts that were donated specifically for the science program. Work is being done to identify how best to spend that generous donation.

The School Board members finally discussed resuming many routine businesses that were disrupted over the past couple of years due to the leadership change. The School Board will schedule teachers for interviews, review/revise the Manual at meetings, support teachers through the Care Connection, and conduct a parents’ survey twice a year, among other tasks.

The School Board meeting is to follow an established order with an opening devotion time by the principal.. The Principal is willing to lead devotion at the meeting, and the School Board agreed to conduct parents’ survey two times a year in the 1st and 3rd quarters.
